frequently asked questions
  • What is Wing Chun?

Wing Chun Birmingham Kung Fu training will teach you techniques associated with Wing Chun, a style of traditional Chinese Kung Fu.

  • What’s the difference between Kung Fu and karate, taekwondo, judo…?

All of these are fighting styles or different types of martial arts. The list can also include Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), Capoeira, Aikido, MMA, etc. While many may have similar features and can all be used in self defence, Wing Chun Kung Fu concentrates on calmness and smoothness.

  • Is it purely self defence?

The techniques that are taught can be used for self defence, but will primarily be usable in your everyday life. A stronger and healthier body is beneficial to anyone, and the techniques will help you to improve your balance and core strength.

  • How old do you have to be to start training?

Training can begin as a child, and we offer children’s martial arts classes as well as private tuition. The earliest starting age is usually around 6 or 7 years old, with practitioners continuing to train into their 90s.

  • Do I need to fight?

Physical combat with the intent of hurting your opponent is not necessary, however gentle sparring to improve coordination and technique is recommended.

  • What are the physical effects? Can I lose weight?

The exercise aspect of Wing Chun Kung Fu is one of the best ways to burn fat. Similar to yoga, the balance and shapes held by the body during Wing Chun Birmingham training require strength and flexibility in the body which leads to increased calorie burn. Beginners may not have the strength or flexibility to start with, but the training will soon allow the student to develop further.

  • How does Wing Chun affect the mind?

One of the major aspects of Wing Chun Birmingham is the need for a calm and relaxed mind. Some treat it almost as a form of meditation. A clear and calm mind without distraction allows the movements to be focused on and practiced intensely, which has the bonus effect of carrying on into your day to day life. This will help you to have a calm attitude in all situations.

  • Are the classes large?

Regular classes can have 5, 10, or more students in them, but private classes are also available for those who are not comfortable training with others to begin with, or for those who are more advanced and wish to perfect their technique.
